When the Aperture Foundation translated the book Total Records from French to English,

the cover was redesigned and the interior was altered to reflect the change in both aesthetic and language.

The book itself focuses on photography throughout the history of vinyl album covers.

Below are a few concepts that were presented along with the final outcome of the book.

The first concept was meant to reverse the role of the record sleeve.

Typically a viewer would see the artwork and then the record.

Here you see a record and the interior shows the artwork.

The second concept was meant to expose the interior of the book.

The range of artwork on the inside is vast,

so to avoid showing just a select few of the album covers

the decision was made to just show all of them.

The idea of the word "total" was also brought into consideration by wrapping the

artwork around the entire exterior of the book.

In the end the decision was made to focus on a more photographic approach

to show a stack of records from the side.

This way the viewer has to open the book to view the artwork,

much like how you have to pull an album out of a stack to view the sleeve.
